“Over the years I have seen many a customer become irate when it was discovered the Starbucks barista had the absolute audacity to put pure sugar in their coffee, when they clearly , “asked for Splenda”. This phenomenon of sugar superiority is not limited to your favorite coffee chain. Many people truly believe when they ask for artificial sweetener they are making a consciously healthy decision, which exempts them from the disasters involved with ingesting pure cane white sugar. In addition to the Starbucks stare down, I have witnessed countless people rattle off their grease laden restaurant order, only to angelically look their waitress in the face and say, “and a Diet Coke with that”. Invariably there is a shared look of smug self satisfaction amongst those sitting at the table, because the patron in question had the self control to refrain from a sugary beverage. Are you truly satisfied with your choice? Are you aware that by foregoing a simpler form of fructose you have just unknowingly injected what will eventually break down in your body as a deadly neurotoxin? We are going to discuss three commonly used artificial sweeteners and break down only a minuscule part of what they are doing to your health. If you are reading this with a diet soda in your hand, hopefully it will have made its way into the nearest trash bin by the time you are finished reading. No pressure…”
